the word "emo" is a term thats been around for so long it has lost almost all meaning. that "all emo" station probably plays a lot of stuff that was considered emo when it came out, but the station probably plays a lot of newer stuff that is not much more than watered down, pop-punk infected, mainstream sounding music that has very little in common with what emo means to most people. having said that, i'm sure the station in San Francisco has a much better playlist than your average "Alternative" station, but it probably isn't as good as a good college station (where you can run the gamut of new rock (punk, emo, garage, 'alternative'), country, jazz, blues, etc...).

and please remember, emo is a style of music. now, whats confusing is that there's a camp of people who also use "indie" to refer to a style of music, but generally "indie" means any music released on independent record labels, or by bands themselves, and a defining point of independent music (and independent film) is that the artist has full creative control. which is a neat concept, really, because it means that the "all in the family" country band you just saw at the Maple Fest, who self-released three CDs, well they're an indie too.

so emo, or grunge, or "alternative", or rap-metal, those are inherently just styles of music, and once it looks like they can turn a profit, don't worry, the big boys will get their accountants crunching numbers, and shazaam, you'll start hearing some watered-down emo on the radio.

why's it watered down? so it might appeal to everyone who might hear it. you ever see 12 monkeys, terry gilliam's futuristic film starring Bruce Willis? the test screenings for that movie were horrible, the people just didn't get it, and Gilliam was under tremendous pressure from the studio to recut the movie and make it more 'accessible', a little 'friendlier', a little 'easier for grandma to understand'. and eventually he didn't cut it (they gave him final cut), and it turned out to be one of his best films, and it received tremendous critical and popular praise. thats what indie rock and corporate rock are like, on the indie side you've got the possibility of getting a "Twelve Monkeys" or a "Brazil"... and on the corporate side, well, don't hold your breath cause you're gonna get "The Musketeer" and "American Pie 5".
viva viva veev, yeah. altho one of us really needs to learn how to tie knots.

and another plus- i got the marauders on a show with us in johnstown. oh yeah.
