ahh, the romantic comedy...

whilst trying to force myself to clean (which failed miserably) the house yesterday, i was watching Coming to America. While yes, it is quite funny at times, it seemed to follow a very definate formula. it's also interesting to take note that Cuba Gooding Jr. and Samuel L. Jackson were in this movie before they had really hit it big. but it's funny to note the romantic comedy formulas.

1. A loner/loser is infatuated/in love with the most popular girl and is subjected to humility and various pranks by the jock thus making the attractive female fall for the loser/loner. Yeah, sure, that's going to last. I wish they'd do a follow up of that down the road after their divorced from one another.

2. A "nice guy" falls for the pretty girl, but there's one problem. she's dating a jerk who treats her bad. but our hero/nice guy shows her compassion and mildly waits for her to realize her mistake. mmm, yeeeah, that doesn't work. why don't they do try this kind of movie? Two nice guys and one nice guy is trying to get rid of the other nice guy because nice guy #2 like nice guy #1's woman. welcome to reality! hmm..you know, i wouldn't mind taking a stab at writing something like that...

3. "suspiciously" nerdy girl wearing glasses and ragged hair turns into a Victoria's Secret model and gets the darn handsom guy she's had a crush on. It's the modern cinderella. except w/o the singing mice and the evil step sisters. damn i love singing mice.

Yes these are just are the few that you can go into blockbuster and look for and easily find 20 movies that could fit to these formulas. I'm sure we can thank John Huges for a lot of these movies...there were a vast amount of these that were made in the 80's and the one's made in the 90's were usually remakes of the ones made in the 90's...but with today's current "in crowd."

just a slight observation i had when i rolled out of bed this morning...
